The Merakes gas field is located in the Kutei basin, offshore East Kalimantan at a water depth of 1,370 metres. It was discovered in October 2014, with an initial estimate of gas-in-place of 1.3 tcf. In January 2017, the Merakes-2 appraisal confirmed an upside, and the gas-in-place estimate was increased to 2.0 tcf. Operator Eni fast-tracked the development of Merakes, and the government approved a Plan of Development for Merakes in April 2018. In December 2018, the Merakes development was sanctioned as a tieback to the Jangkrik infrastructure. First gas is expected in 2021.
