The Horizon project is situated in the Athabasca oil sands region of Alberta, around 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. At Horizon, the oil sand is recovered using conventional truck and shovel mining techniques. Bitumen is extracted from the sand and then upgraded into Synthetic Crude Oil (SCO).Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) received regulatory approval for the development of the Horizon mine and associated upgrader in February 2004.
