Mauritania produces gas via the cross-border Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project. Historically, companies have been exploring in Mauritania since the 1960s, but prior to GTA, only one field - Chinguetti - has produced. The oil field came onstream in 2006, but production was significantly lower than expected and ceased in 2017.
