Report summary
Nahr Umr is located in southern Iraq’s Widyan–North Arabian Gulf basin. The Iraq Petroleum Company discovered the field in 1949, but development was delayed until 1998. This delay stemmed in part from the field’s lower priority compared to larger neighbouring discoveries—Rumaila, West Qurna, and Zubair, which were already connected to Iraq’s main export infrastructure. Basra Oil Company (BOC) currently owns and operates Nahr Umr. Initial production began at 5,000 b/d and peaked at 40,000 b/d by 2018. However, BOC later curtailed output to comply with OPEC+ production quotas. Like Majnoon and Luhais, Nahr Umr often serves as a swing producer under BOC’s portfolio. The field remains underdeveloped and is still in its primary recovery phase, supported by basic production facilities. Nahr Umr holds significant associated gas potential, with a gas-oil ratio of 1,886 scf/bbl. This is strategically important for Iraq’s goal of achieving gas self-sufficiency.
