A second round for the presidential election in Argentina will take place on November 19th, 2023. Fixing Argentina’s economy is still the main decisive electoral topic. Given the strategic importance of the hydrocarbon sector for the country, the final goals of both candidates are similar seeking to increase Vaca Muerta production at a faster pace, and make the country an established exporter of oil and gas. Vaca Muerta’s unconventional oil and gas potential is dependent on a stable macroeconomic situation. Although development plans for the area show progress, their pace is always below expectation, and a higher amount of investment is necessary to ramp up output and build related infrastructure. Maximizing YPF’s market and strategic value is conditioned on removing above-ground constraints and Argentina’s macroeconomic and political risk.
