Yucal-Placer is a large dry gas field that is strategically located close to markets in the Caracas area. The field was discovered in 1947 and brought onstream in 1950. Between then and 1989, it produced 150 bcf of gas before being shut in to make way for cheaper gas discovered in the Anaco area, farther to the east.Faced with a countrywide gas deficit, PDVSA tendered the field in 2001.
