China and Australia have just concluded negotiationsfor a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA), known asChAFTA. On the surface, this agreement has wide rangingimplications for the mining sector in Australia, as a variety ofimport tariffs will be abolished or phased out. On paper, thermal coal, metallurgicalcoal and alumina benefit the most from the deal. But in reality the benefits to these sectors will be limited.
