Global hydrogen demand is set to reach almost 200 Mtpa in 2050. White hydrogen is aiming to disrupt supply from manufactured hydrogen and position itself as a low carbon, naturally occurring energy resource. However, the industry is exceptionally nascent, as is the technical understanding of how this molecule is generated and stored. A handful of innovators, backed through private investment, are leading the way. The co-existence of helium may be a valuable commercial lever for white hydrogen exploitation. A few countries recognise it's potential, enabling exploration-led activity through the amendment of existing laws. In this insight, we address the following: What is white hydrogen? What does the pathway to resource development look like? Who are the key players at the forefront of this nascent industry? What policy frameworks are in place to regulate and support industry growth? What could the future of white hydrogen look like?
