      Speakers

      • Richard Wilson joined Wood Mackenzie in 1982 and he is currently based in the company’s Guildford office in the UK. He is an expert in the field of metals supply economics with a particular focus on copper and is a recognised authority on the markets for copper concentrates, blister/anodes and cathodes. Key client engagements include: Raw materials and metals market analyses in support of IPOs and other financing deals; mining and smelting asset valuations; concentrate sales and procurement strategies; expert witness and expert advisor services to copper mining, trading and smelting companies, specialising in contractual non-performance and disputes with revenue and tax authorities in relation to the fair pricing of copper raw materials. Richard holds a BSc (Hons) degree in Mineral Processing from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College London.

      Jonathan Butcher, Principal Economist, Wood Mackenzie

      • Jon leads our economics research team, responsible for developing and maintaining our macroeconomic forecasts. Jon is responsible for developing our global economic outlook, working with researchers and economists across the world to ensure that our whole team has a consistent and integrated set of assumptions and calculations on which to base their insights and analysis. In the past, Jon was an Analyst at Macquarie Bank, where he was part of the commodities research team looking at base metals, iron ore and coal.       Gavin Montgomery, Research Director, Wood Mackenzie

      • Gavin Montgomery joined Wood Mackenzie in May 2011 to help launch the Iron Ore Market Service. Since then he progressed to manage Wood Mackenzie’s metals markets research including the Metals Market Service, Concentrates Service, Steel Market Service and Iron Ore Market Service. More recently he has moved into cross-commodity analysis focusing on battery raw materials. Before entering the metals world, Gavin spent five years living and working across various parts of East Asia for a shipping and logistics company. Gavin holds an MA Chinese from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc International Management from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

    • Copper: the long and short of it

      Nick Pickens, Research Director, Wood Mackenzie

      Speakers

      • Based in London, Nick re-joined Wood Mackenzie in 2015 to manage the Copper Mine Cost service. He has over 15 years experience as an analyst in the metals and mining sector and has worked across base, bulk and precious metals. Nick was previously Research Director at specialist metals consultancy GFMS, playing a key role in developing a mine economics service for gold, copper and PGMs. Prior to GFMS, Nick spent five years in capital markets as an equity analyst at both Canaccord Genuity and Liberum Capital. He covered a diversified portfolio of mining companies, leading research on London listed large cap companies, but also advising junior mining companies in a corporate broking role. He also has experience as Head of Research at specialist iron ore marketing advisor MVS and started his career as a gold and base metals cost analyst with Brook Hunt (now Wood Mackenzie Metals and Mining).

      Sean Mulshaw, Principal Analyst, Wood Mackenzie

      • Sean Mulshaw has followed the nickel and stainless markets for more than 10 years since joining Wood Mackenzie in 2005. He previously held analyst positions with Roskill and the Mining Journal, and was a post-doctoral researcher at the Royal School of Mines in London for about eight years. He has a degree in Geology from the University of Reading and a PhD in Geology from Imperial College. Sean is the co-author of the Nickel Metal Service and contributes towards the Nickel Industry Cost Service and the Nickel Intermediates Service.

      Andrew Thomas, Research Director, Wood Mackenzie; Jonathan Leng, Principal Analyst, Wood Mackenzie; Farid Ahmed, Principal Analyst, Wood Mackenzie

      Speakers

      • Jonathan is a principal analyst focused on zinc mine and smelter supply, plus concentrate analysis. Prior to his current role, Jonathan was manager of the zinc, lead and gold mine cost research teams. He has 20 years of metals and mining experience, primarily in base metal, ferroalloy and gold research. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie, he worked as a geologist for Croesus Gold in Australia and metals research at CRU International. Jonathan also worked in construction cost management at Davis Langdon. Jonathan holds a M.Sc. Mining and Mineral Resource Evaluation, B.Sc. (hons) Geology, and PGDip in Construction Cost Management.

      • Farid Ahmed joined Wood Mackenzie in February 2015 as Principal Analyst Lead Markets, bringing twenty-five years of lead industry experience in roles including R&D, operations and commercial. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie, Farid founded a business consultancy focusing on the metals industry – and on lead in particular – with engagements including market analysis, raw materials acquisition, process development, product failure, capital investment and expert witness. Farid holds a BEng (Hons) degree in Metallurgy from the University of Leeds and co-authors the Lead Metals Market Service.

      • Andrew leads the ten strong lead zinc research team at Wood Mackenzie. He joined Wood Mackenzie (then Brook Hunt) as its refined market analyst, and has held this position, now as research director, for thirteen years. Andrew co-authors the Zinc Metals Market Service. For the first nine years of his career, Andrew was the metal markets editor of Mining Journal, the leading weekly global mining newspaper. He has a BSc in Geology from Royal Holloway New College, University of London and an MSc in Mineral Exploration and Project Evaluation from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, University of London.

    • Aluminium: an interesting metal at last

      Edgardo Gelsomino, Research Director, Wood Mackenzie

      • Over the past 22 years, Edgardo has gained a wide exposure to the entire aluminium value chain, including bauxite, alumina, carbon products and electricity. As the head of the aluminium team, Edgardo guides our aluminium research and makes contributions to Wood Mackenzie's subscription based products and consulting assignments. He joined Wood Mackenzie in 2010 as a senior analyst in the aluminium team. During his career in the metals industry, Edgardo has worked in a number of consulting assignments, including expert witness roles, asset valuations, feasibility and bankable reports, recommendations on commercial strategies, and recommendations of optimal capacity and optimal product mix of downstream operations. Edgardo started his career in the planning department of Aluar S.A.I.C. in Argentina where he was directly involved in one of the smelter's main expansion projects.       Renate Featherstone, Principal Analyst, Wood Mackenzie

      • Renate joined Wood Mackenzie London office in early 2012 as a Steel Market Analyst. She is responsible for developing medium to long term steel demand forecasts for USA, Brazil, India and Russia as part of Wood Mackenzie's Steel Market service. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie Renate worked for 3 years as an economist with Tata Steel Strategy department in London, where she assessed the impact of the latest macroeconomic and steel using sector activity on the overall steel industry. Renate has a BSc in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Reading.

      Sifang Liu, Senior Consultant, Wood Mackenzie

      Speakers

      • Sifang joined Wood Mackenzie in February 2014 as a consultant in Base Metals Costs team. He is currently based in Wood Mackenzie’s Beijing office. Since joining Wood Mackenzie, Sifang has been working on the copper cost service, analysing the cost and production of Chinese copper mines. Sifang holds a MSc degree in Metals and Energy Finance from Imperial College London, a MEng (Hons) degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Manchester and a Bachelor’s degree from Dalian University of Technology.

      • Based in Beijing, Yanting' s knowledge of metals end use markets in China extends to the property, electrical network, transportation, machinery and appliance sectors. Though she focuses on China’s copper market, she has also accumulated an in-depth understanding of copper demand in all of Asia. Yanting joined Wood Mackenzie in 2015 as a consultant in the Copper Markets team. Since then, she has expanded the coverage of the copper market service by building up bottom-up end-use demand model, and conducting primary research in China. She has also published several cross-metals research insights focused on metals demand from China's property market, and the Belt and Road initiative. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie, Yanting worked as an analyst at Rio Tinto, where she assessed China’s long-term growth potential of commodity demand based on research projects on property, land and the industrial sectors. She was also responsible for developing and maintaining the company’s China steel demand model. Yanting holds a MS degree in Economics from Tufts University, and a BA degree in Economics from Nankai University.
