Wood Mackenzie will host its annual Metals & Mining Forum on Thursday 29th August 2019 at the Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo. In this event we set out our vision for the bulks and base markets, examine opportunities for companies involved and assess the main trends shaping markets across Asia. Our 2019 event is themed “Supply Challenges: Different Issues Same Problem” and we will deep-dive into the primary drivers influencing production and trade for a range of commodities and bulk materials.

      Speakers

      • Linda is an industry expert with more than 20 years' experience in commodity marketing, trading, market analysis and corporate strategy. She's worked with four of the largest global diversified mining and resources companies: BHP, Vale, Anglo American and Rio Tinto. With experience in the marketing and trading of various hard commodities (including bulk commodities, and industrial and precious metals) Linda is attuned to identifying opportunities to extract or protect value through various market cycles and various business maturity phases. Linda’s key focus in recent years has centered around leading strategic business transformation programs. These programs aim to extract superior value through the application of new technologies and digitalisation tools to advance analytics and enhance commercial decision making in various hard commodity sectors. In October 2018, Linda joined Wood Mackenzie in Singapore to take up the role of Global Head of Metals and Mining Research. Linda holds a master's degree in organisational psychology from INSEAD, as well as bachelor's degrees in business and the arts.

      • Julian joined Wood Mackenzie in 1989 and has over 25 years' experience in the analysis of the aluminium industry across the value chain from bauxite mining and markets to alumina to primary aluminium smelting, aluminium demand and end-use analysis. His consulting assignments include: numerous assignments involving advisory relating to alumina contract pricing and aluminium off-take agreements, strategic and sales, competitor analysis of the global alumina market for a major producer, pre-feasibility, valuation and socio-economic impact studies in support of greenfield primary aluminium smelters,. Julian has provided advice to principals considering building and expanding alumina refineries and investing in greenfield and brownfield smelter projects. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie Julian worked in British Aerospace Commercial Aircraft Division where he was a development engineer responsible for the development and evaluation of advanced materials and processes for aerospace applications. Julian holds a degree in metallurgy and micro-structural engineering

    • Geopolitical Risk Outlook 2019: China and the global metals & mining sector

      Speakers

      • Energy geopolitics specialist providing strategic direction to energy companies Kaho focuses on the political economy, energy policy and geopolitics of China and Eurasia, and their implications for businesses and global markets. Expertise covers investment risks related to US-China-Russia relations, Chinese energy policy, Belt and Road Initiative, East Africa LNG development and cybersecurity. Prior to Verisk Maplecroft, he was a research fellow of Energy Geopolitics Program at Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center and IPE lecturer in the Chinese University in Hong Kong. Also, he has 5 years policy research experience in Beijing. Holds affiliated research positions at the Harvard Kennedy School, the European Center for Energy and Resources Security (EUCERS), the London Asia Pacific Centre for Social Science at King’s College London, and the Asian Energy Studies Centre at Hong Kong Baptist University. Kaho obtained his PhD in International Political Economy from King’s College London. He also holds an MSc in International Public Policy from UCL.

    • Copper: The Risks and Opportunities for the Next Wave of Copper Projects

      Speakers

      • Based in London, Nick re-joined Wood Mackenzie in 2015 to manage the Copper Mine Cost service. He has over 15 years experience as an analyst in the metals and mining sector and has worked across base, bulk and precious metals. Nick was previously Research Director at specialist metals consultancy GFMS, playing a key role in developing a mine economics service for gold, copper and PGMs. Prior to GFMS, Nick spent five years in capital markets as an equity analyst at both Canaccord Genuity and Liberum Capital. He covered a diversified portfolio of mining companies, leading research on London listed large cap companies, but also advising junior mining companies in a corporate broking role. He also has experience as Head of Research at specialist iron ore marketing advisor MVS and started his career as a gold and base metals cost analyst with Brook Hunt (now Wood Mackenzie Metals and Mining).

      • Gavin Montgomery joined Wood Mackenzie in May 2011 to help launch the Iron Ore Market Service. Since then he progressed to manage Wood Mackenzie’s metals markets research including the Metals Market Service, Concentrates Service, Steel Market Service and Iron Ore Market Service. More recently he has moved into cross-commodity analysis focusing on battery raw materials. Before entering the metals world, Gavin spent five years living and working across various parts of East Asia for a shipping and logistics company. Gavin holds an MA Chinese from the University of Edinburgh and an MSc International Management from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

      • Paul joined Wood Mackenzie in 2011 as Principal Iron Ore Market Analyst. He is responsible for the delivery and development of Wood Mackenzie's Iron Ore Market Service. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie Paul worked for 15 years as a commodities analyst with Australian stockbroker JBWere and subsequently Goldman Sachs. Paul has over 25 years experience in commodities analysis in the financial services and consultancy sectors, most of which has been spent analysing the metals and mining sector.

    • Metallurgical Coal: Can We Rely on the Status Quo

      • Robin joined Wood Mackenzie in 2003 and has spent considerable time in both coal consulting and research roles. Consulting assignments included project due diligence, market assessments, price forecasting and coal procurement. An integral part of the research team since 2007, Robin has undertaken global mine cost estimation and supply analysis for both coal and base metals. Robin joined the coal markets team in 2012 and is now responsible for global metallurgical coal markets analysis. Prior to joining Wood Mackenzie Robin spent 7 years in the power and coal industries in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia and Australia undertaking coal procurement, coal exploration, project development geological and engineering roles. Robin also worked as a coal marketer selling thermal coal in Asia. Robin holds a BSc (Hons) in Geology and an MSc in Mining Engineering, from Camborne School of Mines, UK.
