Is green smelting achievable in zinc, lead and copper production? It appears to be a never ending road, and, now as these smelters are energy intensive, this has meant they appear on the climate change radar. This insight examines the key operational issues for these smelters and discusses the steps they need to take to ensure they keep moving forward along the road to greener production. The use of green electricity to resolve a significant amount of CO2 emissions allied to continuous improvement in emissions capture will continue to challenge the assumption that green smelting can’t be achieved.
