What is COP30?

COP30 is the 30th annual UN Climate Change Conference (Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC). It’s one of the most important global gatherings on climate change, bringing together governments, businesses, scientists and civil society to negotiate how the world tackles rising emissions and adapts to climate impacts.

For the first time, the summit will be held in the Amazon region of Brazil – a symbolic location highlighting the rainforest’s vital role in global climate stability.

What should we expect from COP30?

Several major items are on the agenda in Belém:

  • Updated national climate plans (NDCs): countries are expected to submit new or stronger pledges that bring emissions into line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C target.
  • The 'Baku to Belém Roadmap': Building on COP29, this sets the path to mobilise US$1.3 trillion a year by 2035 in climate finance for developing countries.
  • Carbon pricing & forest protection: Brazil is leading discussions on a global carbon pricing framework and a US$125 billion forest conservation fund.
  • Guardrails on carbon credits: Negotiators will debate how to ensure carbon credits deliver real emission cuts and are not used as loopholes.
  • Climate economics & equity: Expect big conversations about how to align decarbonisation with economic growth, especially for developing nations.

Is the world on a 1.5-degree pathway?

This is a defining question. Our independent  energy  transition outlook (ETO) maps four  different routes through the energy transition with increasing levels of ambition and cost – but also difficulty and investment. Our latest update highlighted a credible but narrow pathway to net zero and the increasing risk of a potentially devastating 3 ˚C path.
