North America gas: 5 things to look for in 2021

Predictions for the year ahead

1 minute read

What’s inside this year’s report?

It was a year of records and firsts for North American gas markets in 2020.

Henry Hub prices fell to a 25-year low after a mild winter followed by coronavirus demand losses, and significant under-utilisation of US LNG resulted in storage to refill back to record levels. Conversely, low gas prices incentivised incremental coal-to-gas displacement and resulted in record high summer power demand. Large scale production curtailments occurred to additionally help balance markets and avoid storage overfill.

US LNG feed gas and Northeast production have ramped back up, setting new record daily highs with higher winter prices.

But what lies ahead for the region? Read North America gas: 5 things to look for in 2021 for our predictions.

The report includes:

  1. No sequel to the "great LNG pushback" in 2021
  2. West Coast LNG projects in the limelight
  3. Haynesville production could outgrow the northeast
  4. Seasonal production increasingly utilised to balance markets
  5. Sweeping changes unlikely from a Biden administration, but aspirations start from day one.
