Report summary
Appin forms part of South32's Illawarra Coal group of metallurgical coal mines on the south coast of New South Wales. Mining operations are deep, ranging from 490 to 725 metres, leading to an extremely gassy environment. Following the spinoff from BHP Billiton, South32 is implementing the Bulli Seam Operations project, which will see the simultaneous operation of two longwall units from 2017. The project was approved in 2012 and capital spend is estimated at A$930 million (US$845 million).
