El Descanso coal mine

Report summary

The El Descanso mine is located north of the Pribbenow mine, in the El Descanso North concession area.  Drummond acquired the mining concession from Ecocarbon in September 1998 through an international bidding process. In 2013, a barge ferrying coal at Puerto Drummond overturned and sunk. The incident resulted in the Colombian government suspending Drummond's export license for nearly a month and implementing a new regulation requiring direct ship loading as at 1 January 2014. We forecast El Descanso's production to reach 24 Mtpa by the end of the decade. The mine produces an unwashed low-sulphur, low-ash bituminous coal destined for the export thermal coal market.
