A coal drier explosion occurred 19 January at Teck's Elkview preparation plant. The extent of the damage and the potential impact on production are still unclear. A complete outage would mean a loss of 0.6 Mt per month of premium mid-volatile hard coking coal from the seaborne market. While much will depend on Teck's decisions regarding allocation of remaining production, this supply interruption will put an upward pressure on spot prices in the seaborne market.
