Yesterday, 7 February 2019, the Green New Deal (GND) resolution was introduced to the US House of Representatives by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The GND establishes a goal of 100% renewable energy in the electricity sector, but has far wider implications. The FAQ of the GND proposal states that nuclear plants would be phased out. Coal and gas generation would also cease. In this inform, we briefly review the GND and its potential implications for the US coal industry.
