India is facing acute coal crisis led by domestic supply tightness and surging seaborne coal prices. Despite sufficient pit head stocks, inventory levels at power plants are critical. Thermal coal imports are being impacted due to soaring prices, but metallurgical coal imports are steady. Coal demand in Q4 is expected to remain strong, supported by firm outlook for most of the industrial sectors. However, domestic coal supply is going to improve gradually only, while no respite is expected from seaborne coal prices in the near term.
