Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) Bengalon is large scale coal mine, located 120 kilometres north of Samarinda, East Kalimantan. Coal deposits are divided in two areas known as the Sangatta block and the Bengalon block, which are separated by the Bengalon River. KPC Sangatta is covered in a separate analysis. Bengalon comprises the four northern operations of KPC. A first generation Coal Cooperation Agreement was granted to KPC on 8 April 1982, with first production in 1991. KPC's concession contract was extended into early 2022, before its conversion by the Government into a 10-year Special Mining Business Permit (IUPK) valid until 31 December 2031.
