Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is the largest coal mining complex in Indonesia, and is located 110 kilometres north of Samarinda, East Kalimantan. Coal deposits are divided in two areas known as the Sangatta block and the Bengalon block, which are separated by the Bengalon River. The Sangatta complex is made up of three main deposit areas: Prima Pinang, Melawan and Pinang North. The mine produces predominantly sub-bituminous coal for both export and domestic consumption. KPC's concession contract was extended into early 2022, before its conversion by the Government into a 10-year Special Mining Business Permit (IUPK) valid until 31 December 2031.
