Meandu is located in the southern section of the Tarong Basin, 180 kilometres northwest of Brisbane, and adjacent to the Tarong and Tarong North power stations. It is the largest producer of domestic thermal coal in southern Queensland. Stanwell Corporation wholly owns the mine. Stanwell signed a new five-year contract mining services agreement with Downer EDI in 2020. However, in 2021, Downer EDI sold off its Opencut mining business to the Australian subsidiary of PT Bukit Makmur Mandiri Utama (BUMA). The mine operates under mining lease ML6674.
