Coal generation through 15 June 2020 is down 33%, when compared to the same time period in 2019. The 35% decline in January 2020 coal generation, when compared to January 2019, is the largest decline since monthly records began in 1973. The current downturn is similar to the downturn that occurred in 2016, which was primarily caused by the warmer-than-normal winter of 2015/2016. The causes of the current downturn are more multifaceted.
