As demand for electric vehicles rises, governments around the world are encouraging investment in battery factories to replace traditional engine plants, keeping domestic car manufacturing alive and well for years to come. But there’s a major obstacle to achieving this. Not only does China account for almost 75% of global lithium-ion battery production capacity, its growing influence over the supply and refining of the raw materials needed to manufacture batteries could prove an even greater challenge.
