Global climate action has gathered momentum since 2020 and the spotlight is now on Asia Pacific. Global decarbonisation undoubtedly needs a material contribution from the region. But Asia Pacific faces unique challenges. The combination of the region’s continued growth and legacy dependence on fossil fuels, particularly coal, means the scale of its emissions challenge is enormous compared to its peers. Asia Pacific countries have different priorities and concerns due to varying forms of government, economic systems, growth indicators, resource availability and geography. What strategies will emerge? What barriers does this region need to overcome to reach deep decarbonisation?
