Making real-time decisions: How renewable generation is changing the dynamics of power trading in Europe
Report summary
The past decade has witnessed a tremendous change in Europe’s power capacity, led by wind and solar capacity buildout. As a result, spot power trading has become increasingly volatile and short term: new platforms now enable traders to trade up to 15 minutes before gate closure and traded volumes on the intraday market are growing by over 20% a year. New trading arbitrages have emerged between the different sequential stages of the power market, driven by forecast deviation errors induced by wind generation. Market players need to make real-time decisions to accommodate the volatility of supply and capture the value of their assets.
