Turkmenistan has a closed and rather undeveloped economy. Almost half the workforce are employed in agriculture, and industrial activity outside of the energy sector is limited and tightly regulated by the government. Although privatisation, liberalisation and diversification have been planned in the past couple of years, progress has been slow.
