Ukraine has a diverse fuel mix, but most of its power plants are approaching maturity. A significant portion need upgrading to extend their operating life or alternatives need to be considered. Ukraine has some of the most promising renewable energy resource potential in Europe. With the EU encouraging a greener profile across the region, renewables penetration could be improved with the right incentives, particularly in the power mix. Ukraine also wants to further develop its indigenous gas production to reduce reliance on imports. Appropriate legislation and political stability are important in achieving this.
