How low prices will hit legacy LNG producers worldwide
Report summary
Due to the oil price and our lower for longer spot LNG price outlook, proposed LNG projects are being deferred. However, little attention has been given to the effects of low prices on those projects which have been producing for years. So what are the risks facing legacy LNG projects in the current environment? Low prices and capital restrictions put the sustainability of upstream operations in key supply provinces, like Nigeria, at risk. In addition, the deferral of some contracted LNG deliveries presents other producers, particularly in South East Asia, with a dilemma - produce now at low prices or in a higher price environment in the future. Consequently, we have downgraded our forecast of production in some key provinces by 4.6 mmtpa LNG in 2020, and see further downside risk.
