Sending coal to Newcastle or LNG to Australia? As the country ramps up to become the largest LNG exporter, there are also four separate proposals for the construction of LNG import terminals. This apparent contradiction is being driven by a combination of volatile gas demand, pipeline constraints, declining conventional gas fields and competition for domestic gas from LNG exports. This all points to possible gas shortages where gas is consumed most: in the major east coast demand centres near Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Are LNG imports a realistic part of the solution to the issues facing Australia's east coast gas market?
