In the August China economic focus, we discuss China’s declining population and the government’s efforts to limit its impact on economic growth. Slowing urbanisation has contributed to the current economic downturn, and with a decreasing population, that may only get worse. And China plans to shift from quantity to quality drivers in urbanisation and economic growth. Developing less labour-intensive sectors will help ease the pressure from a shrinking labour force. The government has also extended the retirement age to offset the negative impact from declining working-age population.
