Rio Tinto has declared force majeure on third-party contracts for alumina exported from its refineries in Queensland, Australia. An incident at Jemena’s Queensland gas pipeline in early March has restricted gas supplies to Rio Tinto’s refineries. The Yarwun and QAL refineries have a combined alumina capacity of 7-Mpta. The refineries account for nearly 4.5% of global alumina supply and 10.4% of the ex-China supply. In this insight, we ascertain the impact of the disruptions on the alumina market.
