The Balen plant of Vieille-Montagne started in 1889 as an ore roasting plant for the company's zinc plants in Liège. Sulphuric acid production followed in 1898. Electrolytic zinc production at Balen commenced in 1935. In 1989 Vieille Montagne became part of ACEC-Union Minière, subsequently Union Minière and then Umicore in 2001.
