Baotou Iron and Steel Group is an integrated steel producer in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was reorganised in 1998 from its predecessor Baotou Iron and Steel Company. It is the largest steel plant in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and China's 14th largest steel-producing company by crude steel production (15.2 Mt in 2023). It produces a wide range of steel products, including bars/rebars, wire rods, rails, medium-width hot/cold rolled coils, plates, seamless pipes, hot/cold rolled sheets, and rare earth products. Baotou is a relatively low cost producer sitting within the first quartile of the Chinese cost curve. This is mainly due to its high self-sufficiency rate in iron ore and the availability of cheap coal and coke in the region.
