The Beatrix operation is a long‑established shallow to mid‑depth underground gold mine near Welkom and Virginia, about 280 km southwest of Johannesburg in South Africa’s Free State province. It uses a conventional breast mining method and operates from two shafts—No. 1 and No. 3. Access to the ore body is via a vertical shaft system reaching 26 level, around 1,350 m below surface, with most mining taking place from No. 3 shaft. No. 1 shaft now serves mainly as a secondary escape route, and No. 4 shaft was closed in early 2023.
