End-use copper demand from passenger electric vehicles (EVs) is estimated to increase exponentially over the next decade. A large part of this incremental copper demand will be in the form of electrodeposited (ED) copper foil, as consumers switch from internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs. Consequently, we are seeing a flurry of investments and expansions in the copper foil business as demand from EV battery manufacturers gathers pace. Wood Mackenzie estimates that in 2021 alone at least 1 Mtpa worth of ED copper foil manufacturing capacity announcements were made, with completions scheduled over the next 5-7 years.
