The Hayden Smelter was commissioned with two conventional oil fired reverberatory furnaces in 1912 to treat concentrates from the Ray mine. The Inco flash furnace together with a new acid plant was commissioned in November 1983 at a cost of US$133M. Early problems with dust plugging of the gas handling system, failure of sections of the sprung arch roof and erosion of sidewall refractories led to major rebuilds in December 1984, February 1986, April 1987 and March 1989.
