Mary River iron ore mine

Report summary

Mary River is a surface mine approximately 2,870 kilometres north of Montreal that lies within the Arctic Circle in Nunavut, Canada. It is operated by Baffinland Iron Ore Mines (Baffinland) who are jointly owned by ArcelorMittal and Iron Ore Holdings LP. The mine could eventually produce 18Mtpa but Baffinland have not committed to developing the project beyond phase I production of 4Mtpa. The major challenge for the mine comes from its location as it needs to undertake surface mining, land transport and ocean shipping in Arctic conditions. The first shipment of ore from the project occurred in August 2015.
