Mary River iron ore mine
Report summary
Mary River is a surface mine owned and operated by Baffinland Iron Ore Mines located approximately 2,870 kilometres north of Montreal in the Nunavut territory, Canada. Baffinland is jointly-owned by Iron Ore Holdings LP and ArcelorMittal. Baffinland's original plan was to build an operation able to reach 18 Mtpa of production capacity at Mary River. However, in January 2013, due to both difficulties in financing the large initial development cost and the need to begin generating revenue, Baffinland decided to scale back Mary River's initial plan to a more modest operation. Baffinland has also been investigating the possibility of tripling Mary River's production capacity. The so-called Mary River Phase II project would require the construction of a brand-new rail line, upgrades at Milne port, moving crushing and screening facilities to the port and the purchase of additional mining equipment.
