The operation is a restart of the historic Rio Tinto mine known as Minas de Rio Tinto which shut down in 2001. In 2015 the owner EMED Mining re-branded to become Atalaya Mining, and the asset was renamed Proyecto Riotinto. The restart was developed in two phases, with an initial 5 Mtpa operation expanding to 9.5 Mtpa. A further expansion to 15 Mtpa was approved in late 2017 and fully commissioned by January 2020.
