Asset Report
Mponeng (from 1998) gold mine
Report summary
Mponeng is the world`s deepest mine, exploiting gold-bearing reefs through sequential grid mining at depths of 2,800m and 3,400m. Mponeng was acquired by Harmony Gold on 1 October 2020 from AngloGold Ashanti alongside the Mine Waste Solutions asset for a total consideration of US$200 million. Ore production at Mponeng is from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) using underground mining methods with access by shaft. Ore is processed in a 2Mt/a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, followed by electrowinning to produce a dore on-site. There are plans to access the Carbon Leader Reef (CLR) which is located about 900m below the VCR. A 2-phase life of mine extension project was planned at Mponeng, and a feasibility study for life extension was initiated. Phase 1 production completed at the 123 level in 2019, accessing deeper, higher-grade ore with the development of a decline access below the current secondary shaft. Phase 2 has yet to begin development.
