The Electrolytic Refining & Smelting Company of Australia (ER&S) was formed in 1908 to electrolytically refine blister from Mount Morgan and to smelt local copper and precious metals ores. In 1938 the smelter was expanded by the installation of a blast furnace and two small converters, and in 1959 a larger blast furnace was installed together with a Lurgi updraught sinter machine.
