The development of lead and zinc smelting at Port Pirie dates from the discovery in 1883 of the rich lead-silver-zinc deposits at Broken Hill in New South Wales, Port Pirie being the nearest seaport. Lead smelting commenced in 1889, when a refinery was commissioned by the British Broken Hill Pty Ltd to refine bullion produced at Broken Hill.
