The refinery is located at the Sar Cheshmeh mine site, which is 50km southwest of Rafsanjan in Kerman Province. Initially there was only a road link, but rail links to the Gulf port of Bandar Abbas and to Tehran were opened in 1993. The refinery was constructed by Krupp and Mechim and was virtually ready for commissioning in early 1979, the beginning of the Islamic revolution.
