Site visit report: Thacker Pass lithium project

Report summary
On 25-26 June 2026, we visited Lithium Americas' technical centre in Reno, the Thacker Pass construction site, and the workforce hub in Winnemucca to gain a deeper understanding of the project, assess the work undertaken to mature the processing flowsheet, and review construction progress. The visit provided valuable insight into what is required to bring a lithium project of this scale from concept to operation. The trip was particularly important given Thacker Pass's status as a first-of-a-kind lithium clay operation and a potentially significant future source of US lithium supply. Understanding how the processing flowsheet has evolved through development offers valuable lessons for other emerging lithium extraction technologies, including non-traditional lithium mineral processing routes and direct lithium extraction (DLE) projects.
