Previously, mining at Tonopah was from a 20kt/d open-pit molybdenum and copper mine commissioned by Molycorp in 1981. Operating at full capacity metal production was 2kt/a copper and 8kt/a molybdenum. Operations were suspended in 1983, restarted in 1984, suspended in 1985, restarted by new owners Cyprus Minerals in 1989, and then closed in 1991.
