In the early 1990s Korea Zinc started studying the feasibility of building a new zinc smelter in Australia to service the growing Asia - Pacific markets. Sites at either Gladstone or Townsville had been considered, the final choice being the latter. The smelter is located on the coast making it a custom smelter, close to Australian sources of feed, but not wholly dependent upon them. The majority of the product zinc is exported.
