Following its announcement on 3 March that it would begin producing nickel matte for the battery sector supply chain, Tsingshan received a lot of criticism regarding the carbon footprint of the Morowali Industrial Park, where the matte is to be made. On 8 March, Tsingshan looked to address the criticism by announcing the development of a renewable energy base to support not only the Morowali site, but also its other major industrial park at Weda Bay. The company stated it will build 2 GW of solar and wind capacity in the next three to five years, to be followed sometime later by a 5 GW hydro-electric facility. How much will the investment cost, what will be the land footprint of such an endeavour and by how much will this reduce CO2 emissions at Morowali?
