The Vishakhapatnam (Vizag) zinc smelter was commissioned in 1977 specifically to treat imported concentrates. The capacity at commissioning was 30kt/a zinc and the capital cost, including the 10kt/a-lead smelter, subsequently increased to a capacity of 22kt/a lead and 75t/a silver and commissioned in 1978, was approximately US$68M.
