On 1 August 2024, workers of the No. 1 Union at the Escondida mine voted 99.75% against BHP’s offer for a new collective bargaining agreement. The majority owner, BHP, has requested a mediation with the Chilean government. The complaints about the recent contract were that it offered a ‘one-time’ bonus, it extended working days, and there was a cut in current benefits. The workers are asking for a 1% of company dividends disbursed equally.
