Zinc will play a vital but unglamorous role in the energy transition. The need for long service lives and low maintenance costs means that zinc’s main role in the energy transition will be its traditional one – providing corrosion protection for the steel used in the build out of renewable energy, and large scale solar power installations in particular. However, the commodification of the construction of these plants will see the intensity of zinc’s use in them decline. As a consequence, demand from the sector is set to fall from 0.8Mt in 2025 to 0.5Mt in 2050.
