Early exploration in the basin focused on the Tertiary deepwater play. The 2001 Chinguetti discovery created initial excitement that was short lived due to performance issues at the field, leading to substantial reserves downgrades. In 2015, Kosmos Energy made the multi-tcf Tortue (a.k.a Ahmeyim) gas discovery in Mauritania. A further well in January 2016, proved up the extension of the Greater Tortue Complex south in to neighbouring Senegal. Also in 2015, Kosmos made a second large gas discovery with its Marsouin-1 exploration well. The Senegal-Bove Basin has thus become a global exploration hotspot, with further E&A activity ongoing in the next few years. We analyse the remaining yet-to-find potential of the basin in Senegal and the achievable exploration metrics from future activity.
